In January 2010 I set myself a challenge - To take a photo a day for the whole year. Sounds so simple.. But I want each of the photos to be worth printing in at least A4 size, something that is interesting, beautiful or unusual in some way. This should be a way for me to increase my photography skills and something that is worth sharing with friends and fellow photogs. I stopped uploading photos to this blog for around 7 years...So I will be uploading pictures to fill in the blanks.

113 - Kolkata street family
I thought about wether or not I should publish this or not. In the end I decided that the photo is un manipulated and a true representation of the sites in Kolkata so it fair to publish.

114 - Street sleeper
Man sleeps on the street in old Delhi.
Photographically I lie the colours an the composition. The subject matter is provocative but sad.

112 - Shaving mirror
Man's reflection in the mirror as he gets a close shave with a straight edge razor on the streets of Delhi.
109 - Asleep on the road
Down and out and sleeping in the middle of the road, this man amongst many many others drew my attention. Do I take the picture or not....yet I snapped a photo and moved on while he slept. A few minutes later in a similar scene I could not bring myself to push the shutter.
106 - Provocative
Today I asked myself about the ethics of taking photos of people that are clearly struggling in life. I hesitated for a second and took this photo, moving on to many worse scenes. I think as long as the photo tells the truth it is fair game. Little did I know that just a few minutes later I would baulk at pushing the shutter button because the scene was too upsetting.
India really is a fascinating country with world class industry segments, great cultures, friendly people and delicious foods, but there is a chasm between the rich and the poor that is difficult to understand unless you see it for yourself.

101 - Mates
Two Indian men sit against a wall early in the morning, one to pose for the cameras and gives me a nice smile while his mate looks on with interest.
After I take his picture he asks me for money. I refuse and move on for my next shot.

100 - Contemplation
This man sits in the middle of the road early in the morning. I seems to me that he is deep in contemplation.
99 - Across the street
This man's orange coloured clothing contrasts against the blue roller door. I spotted him from across the street and snapped the photo from the middle of the road.
98 - Pani wala
A Pani wall is a water seller found in the streets of India.
They sell water from a small two wheeled cart using ice to chill the water.

96 - The Sikh Guard
This man seemed to be the guardian of the Sikh temple in Old Delhi.
He carried a long wooden spear with a shining metal tip.
He controlled traffic entering the temple grounds.
Rather than try to take his photo from across the street, we asked his permission and he posed briefly for us.

94 - Blind woman
As we drove past this woman sitting on her bed out in the street we noticed that she was blind. I snapped a photo as we sped by. I guess she may never see this photo and it reminds me of just how lucky we are.
93 - Newlywed on scooter - New Delhi
Woman rides behind her new husband on a motor scooter. We know she is a newlywed because of a special bracelet on her wrist as well as this colourful Sari with bright sequins.
92 - Watermelons for sale
This vendor has a large pile of watermelons on his left. Each stack of melons is hld in place by small bits of stone or coconut shell wedged underneath to keep the stack stable.
I like the colour combinations of the orange background and the green and red watermelon.

90 - The pedicab driver
Straing under the heavy load of passengers in his rickshaw he pushes the bicycle peddles for yet another round. It's 44 degrees.
87 - Toll collector
This man collected our toll of 45Indian Rupees ($1.00) for crossing interstate.
He was smiling as he worked. Gotta love that missing tooth.
