I have attened TaiPusam in Malaysia three times. This is without a doubt one of my highlights in photography. It is a disturbing day. Starting around 5AM in the morning my friend Arthur and I arrive at the Batu Caves ready to take photos. Its still dark, but already its warm and humid. Smoke fills the air and the music is blaring from speakers, and a few small bands.
Devotees arrive in an unbroken march. They have walked fro miles from their temples. many carry steel cans on their heads filled with milk to offer to their god at the top of a long stair case inside the Batur Caves.
The event reminds me of an Indiana Jones Movie. It s both exciting, and frightening at the same time.
No one minds having their photo taken despite some having hooks in the skin, their cheeks impaled with skewers, clearly some of the participants are either in a trance or on drugs.
Here are just few of my favourites.
